East Village Residence, New York City (2013-2014)
(One bedroom, art studio, two bathroom condo -2200 square feet)
This apartment in Manhattan’s East Village was a complete gut renovation after a fire destroyed much of the interior. The focus for the redesign was to provide a clean, simple living space that would highlight the couple’s art collection, including a room designated as an art studio and use of gallery lighting. The floor plan was reorganized to include an open kitchen, custom shelving and highly tailored millwork elements. The custom gray washed wood shelves carefully mask the television (so it is not the focal point of the living space) while creating an artful composition on the main living room wall. The blackened steel built in shelving provides a dark backdrop for sculptural objects. Furniture was carefully selected to bring texture as an offset to the white gallery walls as well as to reinforce the aesthetic implied by the artwork.
